To me, hope is a much deeper sense of all-rightness in my world and the world at large, whereas optimism is more of a mindset, even a personality trait.<br /><br />There are a lot of social, emotional, and spiritual factors in the kind of hopelessness you refer to, and I don't think it's just youth who feel it. It can be overwhelming but starting with the youth that we do have contact with, letting them know they matter and are cared for, is one way to offer hope, even incrementally.<br /><br />You mentioned that there has been "an explosion in the development of human rights, women's lib and sexual freedom." You discuss mainly the latter -- but more in relation to the first two, I'd suggest that some of what you refer to as fallout could also be called (to use Mark K.'s word) "pushback." Old structures and systems die hard.
